Avoid Sports Injuries: Protect Those Teeth!

Categories: Dental Emergency

sports dentistry Gibsonton

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we want to raise awareness of the importance of athletic mouth protection. Patients should think of custom mouthguards as a critical part of their protective gear.

Did you know- over 5 million teeth are knocked out per year? Many of these dental traumas happen on the playing field or court. Each dislodged tooth involves several trips to the dentist and hundreds of dollars in restoration amounts. Not to mention pain!

Most parents require their children and teens to wear helmets when biking and shinguards while playing soccer. Parent should also emphasize the importance of mouth protection from your child’s very first 5-year-old T-ball game. And we all need to practice what we preach.

There are three main types of mouthguards:

  • ready-to-wear.  The stock mouth protectors are pre-formed and ready to wear. Unfortunately, they rarely fit well.
  • boil and bite. They are to be softened in water and then formed to the mouth (follow the manufacturer’s instructions).
  • custom-fitted.

You can find boil and bite mouth protectors at Gibsonton sporting goods stores. They are to be softened in water and then formed to the mouth (follow the manufacturer’s directions).

Some Gibsonton dentists offer custom sports mouthguards that provide the highest level of protection and comfort. Mouth protectors that are comfortable are more likely to be worn by kids who complain about wearing a mouthguard. Ask your dentist about custom mouthguards.

Mouth protection is extremely important for Gibsonton patients with braces or fixed bridge work. Some Gibsonton orthodontists recommend mouth protectors for lower teeth as well.

sedation dentistry Gibsonton

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we encounter many nervous dental patients. ‘Nervous’ is an understatement in some cases—especially patients who are having a dental emergency.

Patients who come in with a tooth injury are already experiencing pain. If they have dental anxiety or dental phobia in addition to the injury, the experience can be downright terrifying.

We Understand Dental Anxiety

We understand. As an emergency dental clinic, our practice specializes in putting patients at ease. We use different types of dental sedation to help nervous patients with a dental emergency.

We practice gentle, pain-free dentistry. Dental treatment will not begin until you are numb.

We,= Will Ease Your Pain Quickly, Then Proceed At Your Pace

Speak up immediately if you have a problem. We will pause treatment, administer an additional analgesic and wait until it takes effect.

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we never rush your dental visit.

We provide many in-office amenities at Your Time Dental Urgent Care which help our dental patients concentrate on something pleasant during dental treatment.

Not every dental patient chooses sedation dentistry. Sometimes chemical-free diversions such as listening to your favorite music provide a distraction while allowing you to remain clear-headed.

Don’t let dental anxiety keep you from getting professional care for your dental emergency. At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we understand dental anxiety and will help you through your process.

We treat dental trauma without leaving you traumatized.

Why A Root Canal Is Not Something To Fear

Categories: Dental Emergency

root canal sedation Gibsonton

Today’s Your Time Dental Urgent Care post addresses one of the most feared dental procedures: the infamous root canal.

If you are told that you need a root canal, don’t panic. Your dentist recommends this procedure when it is better for your tooth than the alternatives.

A successful root canal (or endodontic treatment in dental-speak) can save a tooth and prevent the need for an extraction followed by a dental bridge, dental implant, or gap in your smile.

If, after a thorough evaluation, we determine that a tooth needs a root canal, our team will explain the procedure and costs that are involved.

Root canals are handled to save an infected tooth. If not treated, abscesses and complete tooth loss may occur.

During the procedure, Kernagis will remove the nerve and pulp, and then clean and disinfect the interior of your tooth (the canal). The next step is filling and sealing the cleaned area with a special rubbery material, and then protecting the restored tooth with a crown or filling.

Root canals have the reputation of being painful, but this is not the case anymore. There are several effective pain management methods available today at Your Time Dental Urgent Care. We will make sure you are comfortable during the procedure. Once the infected tissue is removed, we will focus on helping the area heal.

Your Time Dental Urgent Care is more than just an emergency dentist. We offer a number of great dental services. If your dental needs are urgent but not emergencies, that’s no reason to avoid calling us. We have late and weekend hours specifically so that you CAN call us when you need to.

Can You Handle A Dental Emergency?

Categories: Dental Emergency

Fishhawk after hours dental

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we hope you never go through a serious dental emergency. It’s important, however, to know what to do in such a situation. Call us at Your Time Dental Urgent Care in Gibsonton. It could be an urgent problem that needs our attention.

Here is a quiz on dental emergencies and other oral issues.

One of the wires on your braces breaks. What do you do?

a. Cut off the loose piece.
b. Put a piece of orthodontic wax on the end if it is irritating your tongue or gums. Schedule an appointment immediately with your orthodontist to have it fixed.
c. If the wire has cut your gums, rinse with a solution of salt and water.

Both b and c are correct. If you don’t have a piece of orthodontic wax, you can use a cotton ball to cover the sharp end. If you cut off the loose end of the wire, you risk swallowing it.

Your six-year-old falls on the driveway and knocks out a front tooth. What do you do before driving immediately to the nearest dental office or ER?

a. Put the tooth back in the socket.
b. If the tooth is dirty, scrub it with a brush.
c. Put the tooth in milk.

Your response depends on whether it is a baby tooth or permanent tooth. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, it may be successfully re-implanted if done rapidly. Make sure you only hold the tooth by the crown, never touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water being cautious not to brush off any tissue attached. It possible, put the tooth back in the socket. This may not be possible with younger children.

Because it is important to keep the tooth from drying out on your way to your dentist or nearest emergency room, you can put the tooth in a cup of milk. Baby teeth should not be reinserted because it can potentially harm the emerging tooth.

You lose a filling and the tooth starts hurting. After scheduling an appointment with your Gibsonton dentist, what do you do in the meantime?

a. Save the filling.
b. Take OTC pain medication.
c. Put an aspirin on the tooth.

Both a and b are correct. Though your dentist can’t use the same filling to repair the problem, it may reveal useful information about the cause of the separation. Never put an aspirin on a tooth because the acid in it could irritate your gums.

One of your teeth suddenly darkens. What are the possible causes?

a. The nerve inside the tooth is damaged.
b. It is a side effect of a medication you are taking.
c. Gum disease.
d. An infection.

The answer is all of the above.
