Affordable One-Visit Tooth Fix

affordable fix for chipped tooth Tampa

Some Tampa people are unhappy with the way their teeth look but many mistakenly assume that cosmetic dentistry is far too pricey to pursue.

Sure, a complete mouth reconstruction can be an expensive investment. Consider the cost of dental school and post-graduate training for a master level cosmetic dentist. Consider the expense of individually creating multiple restorations at a high-tech dental lab. Consider the cost of setting up and maintaining a full-service dental practice or laboratory.

Before you give up on improving your smile, however, think about a less celebrated but extremely effective and affordable cosmetic dental remedy: dental bonding.

Dental bonding has a wide range of applications for unsightly teeth. Bonding can repair a tooth that is damaged, chipped, short, or discolored. It can also fix teeth that have gaps in between them.

How does the dental bonding procedure work?

First, your tooth will be slightly (but painlessly) roughed up to help the resin adhere. Your dentist will use a shade guide to ascertain the precise color of the composite to match the existing teeth. Your dentist will apply liquid composite resin on the tooth, layer by layer. He or she will carefully shape and polish it before it hardens. The tooth is then covered with a conditioning liquid that assists with adhesion.

Once the resin is bonded, it is further molded to the exact shape for your bite and appearance. A laser helps quickly bond the resin in place as it hardens. Further shaping and polishing, if required, complete the procedure. The result is a beautiful smile.

Bonding is a simple and cost-effective method for perfecting your smile. Call today at to set up an appointment at 813-519-0128.

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum?

Tampa Oral Dentistry I’m Richard Kernagis DMD of Your Time Dental Urgent Care in Gibsonton. My patients often ask me if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular dental exams.

Before I answer that question, let me tell you a little bit about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually beneficial for your teeth.

Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that xylitol prevents the growth of the bacteria that initiates cavities. It also lessens plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of my patients with diabetes enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. For my patients that cope with frequent dry mouth, I recommend xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production while protecting against cavities.

Now, back to the golden question. Is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your family dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea. However, you should still brush your teeth thoroughly (with a soft brush) after meals and get twice-yearly exams and dental cleanings.

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, our goal is to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for life by preventing dental issues before they start. If you postpone dental visits until you feel pain, you risk losing teeth and most certainly will require more extensive treatment than if the dilemma was caught earlier.

Is it time for a dental exam? Call us at 813-519-0128 to book an appointment. Our comfortable team is waiting to take care of all your dental needs.

Teeth Look Too Short? Lengthen Them!

fix gummy smile Gibsonton

Most Gibsonton people who are considering cosmetic dentistry are aware of the cosmetic dental procedures that are frequently advertised in the Tampa area.

There are porcelain veneers: a custom made wafer-thin covering permanently attached to the front of a tooth to make it stain-free and perfectly shaped. Veneers can repair small chips and crack in teeth that are free of decay. Many Your Time Dental Urgent Care patients get minimally invasive veneers on their top six teeth for a dramatic improvement.

Orthodontia has received a lot of attention in Florida in the past twenty years with the introduction of invisible and short-term braces. And braces are not only for ‘tweens and teenagers. At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we have seen more adults straighten their teeth to achieve stunning smiles with discrete orthodontic treatment.

Porcelain crowns have been around for generations but continue to restore decayed or damaged teeth while providing beauty, strength, and natural function. Porcelain crowns are also used with innovative dental implants to restore missing teeth.

A cosmetic dental procedure that is lesser-known in the Gibsonton area is crown lengthening. If you feel that your teeth appear too short or that your smile exposes more gum than you would like (a ‘gummy smile’), you may be interested in crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening surgery is a safe and effective procedure that exposes more of the visible part of the tooth while minimizing the vertical length of exposed gum tissue.

When a gummy smile is corrected, our Gibsonton crown lengthening patients are often surprised at how it positively affects their whole face. They love their new smile which reveals pleasing, symmetrical portions of their upper teeth that have been hidden under gum tissue their whole life.

Sometimes, crown lengthening is used when a tooth is fractured at the gumline. The surgery makes tooth structure accessible for the required restoration.

Digital imaging helps Tampa dental professionals perform crown lengthening with exactness. A highly-detailed, 3-D image of tooth and bone structure allows the cosmetic dentist to contour a gumline to the patient’s exact specifications.

If you would like to find out if crown lengthening is right for you, schedule a consultation by calling Your Time Dental Urgent Care at 813-519-0128. We are located at 13145 Kings Lake Drive Ste 105B in Gibsonton. We look forward to showing you photos of crown lengthening patients who are enjoying their new look.

Why Is Dry Mouth Risky For Your Teeth?

Why Is Dry Mouth Dangerous For Gibsonton Dental Patients?Hello, welcome to the Your Time Dental Urgent Care blog. Today we are going to talk about Dry Mouth, an unpleasant condition that can actually impact oral health.

Reduction of saliva flow resulting in a dry mouth is a common dilemma, especially among older adults. However, individuals of all ages experience the symptoms of dry mouth at one time or another. These symptoms include a dry, red tongue, difficulty swallowing, and persistent sore throat.

Sometimes dry mouth is caused by a disease or infection, but a more frequent cause of dry mouth is prescription medications.

Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers (all used extensively in Gibsonton) are just some of the drugs that list ‘dry mouth’ as a common side effect.

It is common for allergy-prone Your Time Dental Urgent Care dental patients to complain of dry mouth when they start taking antihistamines during the hay fever season.

Aside from being an uncomfortable nuisance, untreated dry mouth can cause tooth damage. Adequate saliva is needed to keep the mouth lubricated, wash the food from teeth, and neutralize the acidic environment caused by plaque. Extensive tooth decay can occur in the absence of saliva for dental patients with chronic dry mouth.

If you are unsure of the cause of your dry mouth, or if you are looking for dry mouth treatments, call Your Time Dental Urgent Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Richard Kernagis.

Six 10-Second Healthy Tooth Helps

Apollo Beach cosmetic dental and tooth implants

It doesn’t have to take a lot of time to improve your oral hygiene. In fact, you can form a new habit to benefit your oral health in 10 seconds.

I’m Dr. Richard Kernagis with Your Time Dental Urgent Care writing to offer my patients 6 ways to add vital dental care to each day in 60 seconds or less.

Find a better place for your toothbrush.
Look around. In 10 seconds you can probably find 5 places to set your toothbrush that will permit air drying and can inhibit the growth of microorganisms that a closed, moist environment would encourage.

Leave the floss on the counter.
If you want to build consistency, you need reminders. Deliberately setting out the floss will give you more commitment to use it. And if you see it, you’ll remember that commitment.

Swish.
If you’re in 20 seconds already, might as well grab the fluoride rinse and rinse away bits of food after flossing and freshen your breath at the same time. 10 seconds is the minimum but 20 is twice as good.

Smile in the mirror.
Check out those chompers. Examine for 10 full seconds. Inspect gums for bleeding or tenderness, missed fragments of food, staining, or other concerns.

Have a water chaser with dark beverages.
Rinse your mouth with a sip of water when drinking cola, tea, or coffee throughout the day. A mere 10 seconds will suppress discoloration.

Call Your Time Dental Urgent Care.

10 digits, 10 seconds, a short conversation and you can secure yourself a consultation with me and my comfortable staff. I will examine your teeth for far more than 10 seconds and help keep your smile healthy and beautiful.

We can answer questions about the cost of emergency same-day dental care, urgent dental care, or sedation dentistry. Trusted since 2001 to promote healthy smiles and educated hygiene, we will take care of all your dental needs.

Should Teens See a General or Pediatric Dentist?

when should my child transition from a pediatric to general dentist? Tampa

Some moms and dads in the Tampa area bring their child to a pediatric dentist. Others use a general or family dentist for every member of their household.

What’s the difference between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist?

Pediatric dentists have specialized training to treat infants, young children and adolescents. They use special dental tools created for smaller mouths. Some pediatric dentists have training in child psychology which can help make children feel comfortable during dental treatment.

When should my child transition from a pediatric dentist to a general dentist? Some parents transition their youngsters to a general dentist as soon as all their child’s permanent teeth come in. Other parents have their children see a pediatric dentist until their late teens.

Does your teen feel comfortable at a pediatric dental practice?

Sometimes, when a child hits their early teen years, they feel uncomfortable at a pediatric dental practice. This is especially true if the office is furnished and geared toward toddlers and pre-teens. In this case, the teen may choose the right time to transition.

Above all, it’s important that your child feels comfortable at the dentist. If your child starts feeling like they are too old to see a pediatric dentist, it’s time to switch to a general dentist.

We understand the oral health needs of your son or daughter.

Remember that the team at Your Time Dental Urgent Care is willing and able to address adolescent dental needs. We are happy to treat your teen through their adolescent years.

What dental issues should I be watching for during adolescence?

First off, pay attention to your teenager’s nutrition. As children become more independent, they start making more of their own food choices. If you visit any Gibsonton-area middle school or high school during lunch, you will notice that some teens drink soda and energy drinks. Most of those teens most likely drank milk during elementary school. Make sure you get enough calcium to keep your teeth strong. Vaping and smoking take a toll on physical and dental health. Unfortunately, they are too common among the teen group in the Tampa area.

Your dentist is an essential member of your teen’s healthcare team.

Your dentist can help you understand how their diet and lifestyle influence their oral health. If your son or daughter struggles with an eating disorder, a dentist can address any related dental issues. If your teen is undergoing orthodontic treatment, your dentist can monitor their teeth closely during a time when it’s more difficult to keep teeth clean and free of cavities

Regardless of when you transition your teen to a general dentist, make sure they see a dentist at least twice a year. Continue to monitor their oral hygiene practices and set a good example. Watch out for destructive habits. Furthermore, make sure they wear a mouthguard when participating in contact sports.

The team at Your Time Dental Urgent Care has been serving families in the Tampa area since 2001. We value the relationships we have developed with our patients and their families. If you are looking for an experienced, caring family and general dentist in the Gibsonton area, give us a call to schedule a consultation.

Did You Know That You Can Change the Shape of Your Gums?

gum contouring Fish Hawk

Most dental patients know that cosmetic, restorative, and orthodontic dentistry procedures improve your teeth. There are treatments to reshape teeth, straighten teeth, correct damaged teeth, whiten teeth, and replace missing teeth. But what about your gums? Are you aware of how much your gums affect the look of your smile?

You Can Contour Your Gums

The shape and size of your gumline can make your teeth appear too large or too small or otherwise out of proportion. Gum contouring can repair gums that appear too low or too high in relation to the teeth and tailor them for the perfect smile.

People who are unhappy with their gums might want to consider gum contouring. Many dentists and periodontists offer gum contouring surgery.

Gingival Sculpting

This procedure is also called gingival sculpting, gingival contouring, or gum graft surgery, but don’t let the term surgery frighten you. Cosmetic gum contouring is performed using a precision laser. The procedure usually involves little pain and requires no recovery time.

Gum Contouring Can Treat Gum Recession

Gum reshaping is not always done for purely cosmetic reasons, it is also used to treat gum recession, a common condition that can lead to decay and tooth loss.

In gum graft surgery, soft tissue is often taken either from the roof of the mouth, the area surrounding the site of the grafting, or a tissue bank. Gingival grafts used to cover exposed tooth roots can protect against continued gum recession and alleviate tooth sensitivity. Of course, gum grafts often increase the attractiveness of the smile in the process.

If you are seeking more information about gum contouring or other dental procedures, call Your Time Dental Urgent Care today at 813-519-0128 to schedule a consultation.

We provide quality dentistry to patients in Gibsonton and the greater Tampa area.

Correcting Severe Dental Problems At Your Time Dental Urgent Care

Each separate restorative and cosmetic dentistry procedure performed in Tampa can address a specific dental problem. For example, a porcelain veneer can correct the surface of a tooth that is discolored or slightly misshapen. Dental bonding can fill a small chip in an otherwise healthy tooth.

Some Gibsonton dental problems are more extensive and require a combination of procedures. Crown restoration combined with soft tissue grafts can restore a severely decayed tooth with the root exposed. A bone graft and dental implant can restore a missing tooth in an area where the jaw bone has receded. Orthodontia followed by tooth bleaching totally transforms a smile by straightening and whitening.

What is the difference between tooth bleaching and whitening? Whitening is the term for procedures which remove surface stains to restore the degree of natural lightness. Bleaching goes even further by lightening teeth beyond their natural shade. That’s right: you don’t have to resign yourself to yellow teeth even if they have been that way your whole life! The natural shade of your teeth, by the way, like your skin and hair color, is determined by genetics.

Some Gibsonton smiles have been gleaming for years by regular whitening. You can maintain the whiteness of your teeth just as you maintain your fitness level. (Of course, it is a lot easier to make a quick visit to your Gibsonton dentist once a year for whitening touch-ups than sweating in a gym several times a week!)

We live in an age where severe dental problems can be permanently corrected. You don’t have to participate in a TV makeover show in Hollywood to access these premium cosmetic dental procedures. They are available right here in Gibsonton, Apollo Beach and Fish Hawk. Richard Kernagis has the same advanced training and extensive experience as the dentists who keep the smiles of famous actors and musicians camera-ready.

Schedule a consultation at Your Time Dental Urgent Care to discover the perfect combination of procedures to achieve your ultimate smile. Our phone number is 813-519-0128.
